US cuts Europe off from joint fight against Russian disinformation

Donald Trump’s administration has unilaterally ended cooperation with European countries in countering disinformation from Russia, China and Iran, the Financial Times reported on Monday, citing three European officials.
According to the report, the US State Department last week sent formal notifications terminating memorandums of understanding that had been signed under President Joe Biden.
Those agreements, concluded with more than 20 countries in Europe and Africa in 2024, aimed to develop a common approach to identifying and countering “malicious information spread by foreign states to sow chaos.”
The memorandums were part of the Global Engagement Center (GEC), a State Department body created in 2011 to combat foreign propaganda.
