Musk’s dismissed US officials set to return to government jobs

Hundreds of American officials fired during layoffs initiated by the Government Efficiency Department (DOGE) under Elon Musk are being offered a chance to return to public service, Associated Press reported, citing sources.

The General Services Administration gave former employees until the end of the week to accept or decline reinstatement. Those who agree will resume work on Oct. 6 after seven months of paid leave.

The rapid pace of cuts left several agencies short-staffed, undermining basic operations. The Internal Revenue Service, Labor Department and National Park Service have also started rehiring former employees.

Musk took charge of DOGE in January 2025 with the stated aim of reforming the federal government, cutting costs and modernizing its administrative structure.
