U.S. planemaker Boeing has begun developing a new narrow-body aircraft to eventually replace the 737 MAX, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The move comes as Boeing seeks to rebuild its market position after a crisis triggered by safety problems with its jets.

According to the report, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg discussed possible engine cooperation with Britain’s Rolls-Royce Holdings in 2025.

The company has since appointed a new head of its commercial aircraft unit to lead the next-generation jet project. Boeing is already working on cockpit design, though the program remains at an early stage.

The company said its top priorities remain delivering existing orders and certifying previously introduced models.
