Total Internet Blackout in Iran Amid Growing Uprising
According to NetBlocks, Iran is currently in the midst of a nationwide internet and mobile communication shutdown as of January 9, 2026. Even official government websites have gone offline.
The blackout follows 12 days of escalating anti-government protests that have spread to over 340 locations across all 31 provinces.
Originally sparked by the economic crisis (the rial hit a historic low of 1.4 million per USD), the movement has shifted toward political demands, fueled by calls from exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi.
With at least 45 confirmed deaths, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Tehran, stating that the United States is ready to intervene if the regime continues to use lethal force against its citizens.
