UK Considers Banning "X" Over AI-Generated Deepfakes

UK Considers Banning "X" Over AI-Generated Deepfakes
09.01.2026 12:00

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has directed the media regulator Ofcom to explore all measures, including a potential ban, against "X" (formerly Twitter). The move comes in response to the proliferation of non-consensual explicit deepfakes of public figures—including the Princess of Wales (Kate Middleton) and cabinet ministers—created by the platform’s AI chatbot, Grok.

The situation escalates the ongoing friction between the UK government and Elon Musk. Under the Online Safety Act, tech giants are legally responsible for preventing the spread of illegal content.

Government sources suggest that "X" could face fines totaling billions of pounds or an outright ISP-level block.

This reflects a hardening stance in Europe against AI-driven misinformation and the misuse of generative technologies that infringe on personal privacy and national stability.
