EU could use U.S. military bases as leverage over Washington — Economist
The European Union could consider using the presence of U.S. military bases in Europe as a diplomatic lever against United States if Greenland were to join the United States, Britain’s The Economist reported.
According to the magazine, some European states want U.S. bases to remain in place regardless of Arctic operations to ensure security, while others see the threat of closing them as a potential tool of pressure.
Without access to European facilities such as Ramstein Air Base, Washington would find it far more difficult to project military power into Africa and the Middle East, the magazine said.
