President Obama is planning to meet President-elect Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine during a trip to Europe next week.

Obama called Poroshenko on Tuesday to congratulate him on his victory, the White House said in a statement, and "the two leaders agreed to continue their conversation during the president's upcoming trip to Europe."

Details of the visit, including the date and location, are being worked out.

Obama's trip includes stops in Poland, which borders Ukraine, and Brussels, where a Group of Seven nations summit will focus on Russia's incursion into Ukraine. Obama will also stop in Paris to meet with French President Francois Hollande and in Normandy, France, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.

The American president offered Poroshenko full U.S. support "as he seeks to unify and move his country forward."

Obama also "stressed the importance of quickly implementing the reforms necessary for Ukraine to bring the country together and to develop a sustainable economy, attractive investment climate, and transparent and accountable government that is responsive to the concerns and aspirations of all Ukrainians," the statement said.

"The United States will continue assisting Ukraine in these efforts."
