World's biggest cemetery?

World's biggest cemetery?
20.07.2016 23:01
Islamic graveyard Wadi al-salam – which sits in the holy city of Najaf – is believed to be the biggest in the world holding a whopping five million tombs.

Dramatic video shows an epic landscape of sandy coloured graves and buildings.

Distant mosques and tree-laden parks can be seen on the horizon in jaw-dropping images.

The cemetery covers 1,485 acres and attracts millions of pilgrims wanting to pay their respects each year.

According to UNESCO, conflicts with ISIS have seen burials rise and the number of available plots is now running out.

An Iraqi viewer of the video on LiveLeak claims it was once even larger.

He wrote: "It was much bigger before Saddam destroyed much of it during the 1992 uprising."During that time people hid in this cemetery to escape Saddam's crackdown on Najaf city.

"In response he flattened acres of it. It is still larger than many cities around the world with millions of people buried in it dating back 1400 years."

Graveyards are extremely spooky places – a photographer recently captured an image of the Grim Reaper while on a visit to a cemetery.
