Trump says Russia will feel impact of new sanctions ‘in six months’
U.S. President Donald Trump said the effects of new U.S. sanctions on Russia would become evident in six months, responding to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s earlier remarks that Moscow was “immune” to Western restrictions.
“I’m glad he thinks so. Let’s see in six months,” Trump said.
The White House said the sanctions targeting oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil would deliver a “significant blow” to Russia’s economy. According to the Treasury Department, the measures are expected to hurt revenues and may prompt India and China to reduce imports of Russian oil.
Bloomberg reported that the Kremlin expects a hit to the federal budget, with potential losses reaching 120 billion rubles ($1.3 bln) per month if exports fall by 5–10%. Analysts estimate 70% of Russia’s oil exports are now under full blocking sanctions.
Indian refiners and Chinese state oil firms have already paused purchases, and analysts warn that extended sanctions could affect logistics, deepen discounts on Russian crude, and strain Moscow’s ability to finance record-high defense spending.
