An Armenian soldier was killed on the country’s eastern border in a sniper attack by Azerbaijani forces, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense said in a post on Facebook.
"Unfortunately, today we also suffered a loss. Private Karen P. Hovhannisyan was killed by an Azerbaijani sniper. We state with deep grief that nothing will go unanswered,” Artsrun Hovhannisyan said.
Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry rejected the claim as misinformation.
Armenia captured nearly one-fifth of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent districts, in a war after the Soviet breakup in 1991.
While major hostilities ended with a ceasefire in 1994, no peace agreement has been signed.
Azerbaijan says it reserves the right to use military force to regain control of the territory should peace talks mediated by Russia, France and the United States fail to bring results.
