Armenian, US officials discuss prospects for resuming Karabakh talks

US and Armenian officials have discussed the possibility of resuming talks on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Armenian News.am website reported.

The website was told at the press service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry that US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Bridget Brink and Armenian Foreign Minister Edvard Nalbandyan met in Yerevan and discussed steps aimed at resuming the Nagorno-Karabakh talks.

The importance of fulfilling agreements hammered out at the summits in Vienna and St Petersburg was also discussed at the meeting. Nalbandyan hailed cooperation with the USA and joint efforts that enabled progress in relations between the two countries and created good prospects for strengthening and intensifying cooperation.

Brink, as quoted by News.am, said that the USA regarded partnership with Armenia as valuable and was interested in further expanding it. She also expressed interest in discussing issues related to boosting economic relations as well as efforts by the OSCE Minsk Group over the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The sides also discussed international and regional developments, News.am said.

Baku and Yerevan are locked in a conflict over Azerbaijan's breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, which, along with seven surrounding districts, came under the control of Armenian troops in the early 1990s. Dozens of Azerbaijani and Armenian soldiers were killed in the April 2016 flare-up, which has been the worst escalation since the sides signed a cease-fire deal in 1994.
