Asim Mollazade warns of social tension after fuel price rise

Speaking in parliamenttoday, Asim Mollazade, chairman of the Democratic Reforms Party, commented on documentssigned during the third summit of the European Union’s Eastern Partnershipprogram in Vilnius.

“The documents signed duringthe summit opened the doors of Europe for Azerbaijani youth and made it easierto integrate into Europe’s education system,” he said. “It would be good ifMilli Maclis (parliament) adopted a law on high education that would bringAzerbaijan’s higher education system closer to the European higher educationsystem. We need to take urgent action on this.”

The MP also said the decisionof the Tariff Council to increase fuel and gasoline prices would cause a numberof problems.

“The region has seen quite complicateddevelopments of late. This is a sensitive situation because of RussianPresident Vladimir Putin’s visit to Armenia and the developments in Ukraine.  Against a backdrop of these developments, there is no need to cause social tension in the country. The energy pricescould have been increased gradually,” he said.

Before going ahead with theprice rise, the government should have taken action to improve the livingconditions of families with low incomes, he said.

“We need to fix properallowances to protect disabled people and families with low income from the futurecircle of price increases,” Mollazade said. “We have to make sure that peoplefrom these strata of society do not suffer from the price rises and there is nosocial tension.”
