Taken from a height of 423 miles, this is a fascinating view straight down into the caldera of Italy's snow-covered Mount Vesuvius. The sleeping volcano looks peaceful, almost 2,000 years after destroying the city of Pompeii. And the image forms part of an unusual advent calendar being put together by broadcaster NBC News, which is showing a selection of its top-rated satellite views during the countdown to Christmas. The Cosmic Log Space Advent Calendar has also featured aerial views of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, the double volcano on the island of Ambrym in the Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu, and a view of South Africa from the International Space Station.(dailymail.co.uk)ANN.Az
