Azerbaijan’s Ministry of National Security arrested five people who participated in fighting in Syria and Iraq alongside the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria terrorist group also known as ISIL or IS, the ministry said.
The Azerbaijani nationals - Sirxan Xasayli, Rovsan Mikayilov, Elsan Adilov, Vuqar Haciyev and Azar Eyyuvov – fought in Syria and Iraq between 2013 and 2015.
One of them, Rovsan Mikayilov, was sentenced to 13 years in prison by the Grave Crimes Court in Lankaran District. The probe into the four others is still continuing.
The suspected jihadists face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, the ministry said.
