Two police officers killed Thursday in an armed clash with members of a radical Shiite group near Baku were buried today.
Vuqar Nasibov and Ismayil Tagiyev were laid to rest in the Second Alley of Honorary Burial in the Azerbaijani capital.
Interior Minister Ramil Usubov, Prosecutor General Zakir Qaralov, First Deputy National Security Minister Madat Quliyev and other officials attended the burial.
President Ilham Aliyev decreed to decorate the officers posthumously with the "Bravery” medal.
The officers were killed when they attempted to arrest members of the Muslim Union group in the town of Nardaran. The group put up armed resistance, firing on police with assault rifles and a hand grenade, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Four members of the group were killed and more than 10 others were arrested.
The group, led by cleric Taleh Bagirzada, was planning to overthrow the government and impose Sharia law in the country, according to the statement.
