Azerbaijan condemns EU parliament’s decision on Armenian 'genocide'

Azerbaijan condemns EU parliament’s decision on Armenian 'genocide'
17.04.2015 09:41
The Azerbaijan president's assistant for public and political affairs, Ali Hasanov, said on Thursday that the European Parliament's (EP) adoption of a resolution urging all member states to recognize the 1915 events as 'genocide' is "an unjust, political decision that does not reflect facts and serves special agendas."

According to Hasanov, the adoption of the resolution is a reflection of the double standards and anti-Islam stance of the international organizations established under leadership of Europe and the West.

"The EP's decision on 1915 incidents is Europe's most contemptible political decision that has manipulated facts from the World War I, does not reflect any reality, unjust and serves special agendas."

Ali Hasanov stated further that the historical facts disprove claims of genocide and that during the events many Armenian groups had armed themselves and risen against the Ottoman army and attacked civilians in inhumane ways, killing many in cities and villages.

Furthermore, Hasanov highlighted that the Turkish army had taken measures to protect its own civilian populations, in what Armenians call 'genocide.'

The 1915 events took place during World War I when a portion of the Armenian population living in the Ottoman Empire sided with the invading Russians and revolted against the empire.

The Ottoman Empire relocated Armenians in eastern Anatolia following the revolts and there were Armenian casualties during the relocation process.
