Azerbaijan sets date for referendum on constitutional amendments

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Tuesday signed a decree to set Sept. 26 as the date for a referendum on constitutional changes.

Voters will decide on a package of constitutional changes, including an amendment proposed by Aliyev to 29 articles of Azerbaijan's Constitution.

The main notable amendments includes the establishment of the Institute of Vice Presidency and the removal of the presidency age limit as well as the extension of president's term from 5 years to 7 years.

Proposed changes also include reducing the age limit on becoming a lawmaker from 25 to 18.

An article on the dissolution of parliament, rights to conclude interstate and intergovernmental international agreements as well as responsibilities of municipalities will also be included.

Azerbaijan's Constitution was adopted on November 12, 1995. It was first amended through a referendum in 2002 and was amended again seven years later. Enditem
