Azerbaijan summons EU envoy over controversial resolution

Malena Mard, the European Union’s ambassador in Baku, was summoned to Azerbaijan’s foreign and economy ministries over a resolution the European Parliament passed on Thursday, criticizing the state of human rights in the country.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadquliyev condemned the resolution, saying the EU of uses the issue of human rights as a tool of political pressure against Azerbaijan. He said the "offensive” language of the resolution is unacceptable.

Shahin Mustafayev, the minister of economy and industry who also heads the state commission for EU ties, said the resolution is a "serious blow” to Azerbaijani-EU relations. Mustafayev said the resolution is yet another provocative move by "anti-Azerbaijan” forces in Europe.

Milli Maclis, which is Azerbaijan’s parliament, is expected hold an emergency session on September 14 to discuss the situation.
