Azerbaijan's Mariya Stadnyk gave the country's wrestling fans further reason to cheer on Monday as she took the first women's wrestling gold medal of the day to a rapturous response.
She dominated the 48kg freestyle final against Bulgaria's Elitsa Yankova, while Poland's Iwona Matkowska and Russia's Valentina Brik shared the bronze.
"I have never been so happy, so proud," said Stadnyk afterwards. "To be a flagbearer at the opening ceremony and then win a gold medal - it's impossible to express my feelings.
"The atmosphere was amazing. I'm going to sing and dance to celebrate, and I can't wait to see my children."
In the 55kg class, Sweden's Sofia Mattsson defeated Katarzyna Krawczyk of Poland to win gold. Azerbaijan's Natalya Sinishin and Bulgaria's Evelina Nikolova took bronze.
The 60kg class was won by Hungary's experienced Marianna Sastin, who defeated Svetlana Lipatova, the only Russian to reach a final on Monday after a series of shock semi-final defeats, 7-0 on points.
The final gold bout saw Ukraine's Alina Stadnik Makhynia win the 69kg title, defeating Israel's Iliana Kratysh.
