Azerbaijan and Russia both won two gold medals on day one of the men's Freestyle competition in front of 5,000 noisy spectators at the Heydar Aliyev Arena.

There was a huge cheer at the end of the night when Khetag Gazyumov, who had beaten the Russian world champion in the semi-finals, defeated his Georgian opponent Elizbar Odikadze to win the 97kg.

Home cheers had rung out earlier for Togrul Asgarov, who added the European Games title to the three he already held - Olympic, World and European - in the 65kg.

He is one of Azerbaijan's most popular sportsmen and the arena was packed with fans, many of them waving banners that read simply 'Togrul'.

The man he beat in the final, Italy's Frank Chamizo Marquez, had thoughts of winning an Olympic gold himself, but he learned just how far he has to go as he was beaten by fall within two minutes.

In the 57kg class, Russia's Viktor Lebedev outclassed Germany's Marcel Ewald to take gold, before his compatriot Aniuar Guedev repeated the feat in the 74kg final.
