Berti Vogts appointed as Klinsmann's advisor

The head coach of the Azerbaijani football team, Berti Vogts, has been appointed as a special advisor to the U.S. national team' s coach Klinsmann through the 2014 World Cup to be held in Brazil.

The U.S. Soccer Federation earlier appealed to the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) to allow Berti Vogts be a special advisor to the U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann during the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, AFFA briefed the press on Monday.

"We are absolutely thrilled to have Berti join us as an advisor," Klinsmann said in a release. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, both as a player and a coach, and he knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level. He was my coach for Germany in the 1990s and we have a great relationship."

Vogts is a former Germany international who coached the team to the 1996 European championship. Klinsmann was a player on that Germany squad.

Vogts has also been the coach of Scotland and Nigeria, and is currently the head coach of Azerbaijan.

The U.S. begins the Send-Off Series with a play against Azerbaijan on May 27 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

In the group stage of the 2014 World Cup the U.S. will play with Germany, Portugal and Ghana.
