Azerbaijani-born businessman wins third term in Novosibirsk legislature

Azerbaijani-born businessman Mais Mamedov has secured a third consecutive term in the Legislative Assembly of Russia’s Novosibirsk region, winning strong voter support.
The 60-year-old candidate, representing single-mandate district No. 14 covering Iskitimsky, Maslyaninsky and Cherepanovsky districts, received backing from 21,900 voters. His tally was among the highest in the region, second only to long-time speaker Andrei Shimkiv, who won 85.5% of the vote in district No. 13.
Mamedov moved from Azerbaijan to Novosibirsk in 1986 and built a career in both business and politics. He heads the “First Construction Fund” consortium of eight companies in the local building sector, sits on the board of trustees of Novosibirsk State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and co-founded the Russian-Azerbaijani House. In the previous assembly he served as deputy chairman and in June was awarded Russia’s Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” 2nd class.
