Azerbaijan parliament approves changes to CIS Executive Committee charter

 The Azerbaijani National Assembly approved amendments to the Charter of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), taking into account a special reservation.

Under the reservation, the document was ratified except for the Secretary-General’s authority to coordinate the work of CIS sectoral cooperation bodies in political cooperation and interaction with states and other intergovernmental organisations.

Lawmaker Gudrat Hasanquliyev stressed the importance of an open and constructive dialogue with Russia, noting ongoing migration challenges, particularly concerning children who have reached 18 years of age.

“As they say, hidden deals can undermine trust. I have always supported cooperation with Russia and believe serious talks on these issues are needed,” he said.

Samed Seyidov added that the amendments mainly strengthen the legal framework for political cooperation and intergovernmental relations within the CIS.

Officials said the changes aim to preserve Azerbaijan’s strategic relations with the CIS and ensure that cooperation is conducted in a transparent and effective manner.
