Aurigid Meteor Shower Begins, Peak Activity Expected on September 1

The Aurigid meteor shower will remain active from today through September 5, reaching its peak intensity on September 1.

According to the Department of Astrophysics at Baku State University's Faculty of Physics, Aurigid meteors enter Earth's atmosphere at velocities of approximately 66–67 km/s, producing swift and bright luminous trails. The overwhelming majority disintegrate completely at altitudes between 70 and 100 km.

For skywatchers in Baku, the optimal observation window falls on the night of August 31 to September 1, particularly from midnight until dawn, when the radiant ascends to an altitude of roughly 61° above the horizon, allowing for an expected rate of around 5 meteors per hour. No telescope is required for observation; experts recommend naked-eye viewing under clear, light-pollution-free skies, focusing roughly 30–40° away from the radiant point for the clearest trails.
