In October 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed the idea of creating Europe's largest gas hub in Türkiye, where transit volumes lost through Nord Stream could be redirected. Turkish authorities state that in terms of infrastructure, almost everything is ready in the country for the project's implementation.
Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar previously announced plans to open a gas trading center in Istanbul in 2025 with the participation of Türkiye’s BOTAŞ and Russia's Gazprom companies within the framework of the international gas hub project.
