Defense minister opens new military unit near Karabakh

Azerbaijan’s Defense Minister Col.-Gen. Zakir Qaralov has attended the opening of a new military unit near the ceasefire line, the ministry said on its website.

The new military unit has been fully equipped with modern equipment, the ministry said.

Hasanov toured the unit and checked buildings including arms depots, dormitories, canteen and other facilities.

Addressing the soldiers, Hasanov Azerbaijan’s growing military might will help it liberate the Armenian-occupied territory.

"As President Ilham Aliyev said, Armenians shouldn’t come to Agdam or Fizuli districts if they do not want to die,” the minister said. "This statement by the president is in fact an order which we need to fulfill. This is what the people of Azerbaijan expect from us. This is what the commander-in-chief demands us.”

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been in a state of war since the early 1990s when Armenia captured Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven adjacent districts.

While major hostilities ended with a cease-fire in 1994, no peace agreement has been signed.
