Did you remember to tie the knot, Andy?

Did you remember to tie the knot, Andy?

It was the kind of problem that could have put newlywed tennis ace Andy Murray into a spin.

Take your wedding ring off to improve your performance on the court – or risk the wrath of your young bride?

The answer, according to the former Wimbledon champion, is to tie the band to your shoelace. The 27-year-old came up with the idea while competing in the final of the BMW Open in Munich.

The ring stayed safely in place on his Adidas trainer for more than three hours – and may even have proved to be a lucky charm as he beat opponent Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Murray is said to want to 'keep the ring close to him' following last month's wedding to Kim Sears.

A source said: 'He doesn't wear it when he plays, as if you are gripping with both hands on the back swing the ring can catch.'
His wedding ring was back on his left hand by the time Murray won his first title on a clay tennis court.

And he found himself forced to try another new look after being presented with a pair of lederhosen, given to every winner of the Munich tournament along with his $80,000 prize money and a sleek hybrid i8 BMW sports car.

The Scot had suggested he would refuse to wear the traditional Bavarian knee-length breeches and risk offending his German hosts. Last month he said: 'I'm not planning on wearing them whether I win the tournament or not. It might look good on my wife but not on me.'

But in the event he gamely pulled on the decorated shorts, posing in them with his trophy and to try out his new sports car.
The title bid was Murray's first tennis outing since his marriage, in his home town of Dunblane on April 11.

Dubbed Scotland's version of the Royal wedding, the ceremony was held in front of 300 guests at Dunblane Cathedral, before a reception in the hotel the Wimbledon champion owns, Cromlix House.

The British number one has postponed his honeymoon, which is expected to take place when the tennis season is over, but has fielded several questions about his newlywed status.

He insists his home life in Surrey with his partner and their two border terriers Maggie May and Rusty has not changed much.
But the world number three has admitted he is struggling to remember his childhood sweetheart is now his wife.

He said last week: 'I've made that mistake a few times. I've still referred to her as my girlfriend. I'm sure I'll get used to it.'

His first post-marriage final saw Murray defeat German player Kohlschreiber after three gruelling sets in a match interrupted by rain.

He is the first Briton to win an event ranked by the Association of Tennis Professionals on clay since Buster Mottram in 1976, which the 27-year-old said was 'an honour'.

His next major tournament will be the French Open at the end of the month.
