Doctor’s mistake to blame for death of Azerbaijani journalist: source

New details have emerged on the circumstances of the death of Rasim Aliyev, a journalist with the Azerbaijan News Network (ANN) who died in hospital after being beaten up in Baku in August.

A well-placed source at the Clinical Hospital No 1, where the 31-year-old journalist passed away while undergoing a surgery, said a mistake by an anesthetic was to blame for the death.

Aliyev was admitted to the hospital at 6 p.m. on August 8 after being beaten up by a group of people near his family home in Baku’s Sabail district. He was taken to the operating room five hours later when the journalist started vomiting and his blood pressure fell.

A doctor named Elnara failed to inject all the necessary components of anesthesia, causing a situation called "inadequate anesthesia,” the source said. The journalist passed away at the very start of the surgery.

The Ministry of Health didn’t immediately answer calls by ANN seeking comment.

Police have arrested several people, including Cavid Huseynov, former captain of Qabala FK, on suspicion of involvement in the incident.

Speaking hours before his death, Aliyev said he was attacked because of a Facebook post criticizing the soccer player.
