Iranian Rial Hits Record Low Amid Nationwide Protests and Economic Crisis

Iranian Rial Hits Record Low Amid Nationwide Protests and Economic Crisis
28.01.2026 13:00

The Iranian rial plummeted to an all-time low on Wednesday as widespread anti-government protests and a deepening economic crisis continue to rattle the country.

According to foreign exchange tracking websites, the rial’s value on the free market fell to approximately 1,468,000 per U.S. dollar, a staggering contrast to the official government rate of 42,000.

The currency's collapse follows weeks of mass demonstrations that began in late December 2025, initially sparked by soaring food prices and record-high inflation. The unrest has since evolved into a broader challenge to the nation's leadership.

Analysts suggest that international sanctions, coupled with internal instability, have made the rial the world’s least valuable currency, further straining the livelihoods of millions of Iranians.
