Azerbaijan’s rail freight transportation rises 23%

Freight transportation on Azerbaijan’s railways rose 23% year-on-year in May 2026, underscoring the country’s growing role as a regional logistics and transit hub.

State-owned Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) said it transported more than 1.6 million tonnes of cargo during the month, while transit freight volumes exceeded 700,000 tonnes, up 34% from a year earlier.

Nearly half of all transit cargo, about 398,500 tonnes, was moved via the North-South International Transport Corridor linking Russia, the South Caucasus, Iran and India. Another 236,500 tonnes was transported along the northwestern route.

The growth comes as Azerbaijan continues to invest in its transport infrastructure and expand the Middle Corridor, seeking to strengthen its position as a key transit gateway between Asia and Europe.
