Facebook, the world’s largest social networking website, as well as Skype and WhatsApp will have to get government license to be accessible to users in Azerbaijan, according to Ali Abbasov, the country's minister of communications and high technologies.
"Facebook, Skype and WhatsApp, which are providing communications services, will need to get license,” Abbasov told reporters in the Azerbaijani capital on Friday. "This will cause no problems for users. Simply, contracts will be signed between the state regulator and the companies.”
Facebook is the most popular social networking website in Azerbaijan with over a million users.
All three networks are currently accessible in the country.
It was not immediately clear when the companies will have to apply for license and what will happen if they don’t.
