Huseynov, 75, had been suffering from diabetes and "other illnesses,” Zeynalov said.

Iftixar Qurbanov, deputy head of the health department of the Ministry of Justice, confirmed that Huseynov died of an illness.

Huseynov was arrested in 1993 in connection with an armed coup in the city of Ganca and the murder of the prosecutor of Samux District.

He was sentenced to death but the sentence was later commuted to life in prison.
