Tactics shift in Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict

Tactics shift in Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict

Key Points

Military tactics in the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute are shifting, with a greater use of heavy weaponry, attacks on moving targets, and ambushes.

Escalating violence has led to the worst casualty rate since the 1994 ceasefire agreement, although the conflict remains politically choreographed.

The change of tactics is attributable to Baku's strategy of attrition warfare, although this leaves open the possibility of further escalations.

Reports in late 2015 from Nagorno-Karabakh and nearby areas, particularly Armenia's northeastern border with Azerbaijan, appeared to suggest another escalation in violence over the disputed territory, as Azerbaijan seeks to challenge the outcome of the 1991-94 war that left the territory as an internationally unrecognised Armenian-controlled republic within Azerbaijan.
