Paraguay’s Congress has adopted a resolution condemning the Khojaly massacre in Azerbaijan and urging the international community to put pressure on Armenia to end the occupation of Azerbaijani lands, a diplomatic source told Trend Sept.18.
Congresswoman Esmerita Sanchez de Da Silva and Congressman Amado Florentin sponsored this resolution which is the first step towards strengthening the ties between both nations, according to the source.
Moreover, Nicolas Cesar Benitez Saguier, advisor on immigration affairs, also contributed to this important process, the diplomatic source added.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
