Azerbaijan’s parliament condemns European Parliament resolution
Azerbaijan’s parliament, the Milli Majlis, has adopted a statement condemning a European Parliament resolution passed on Dec. 18 that alleged systematic political repression in the country.
The European Parliament document called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release what it described as political prisoners, including academics, civil society activists and opposition figures.
Parliament Speaker Sahiba Gafarova rejected the allegations, saying Azerbaijan complies with international norms and that the resolution reflects a biased approach.
Several lawmakers, including Kamal Jafarov, Azay Guliyev, Ali Ahmadov, Kamran Bayramov, Zahid Oruj, Elshan Musayev, Samad Seyidov and Vugar Bayramov, criticised the resolution as manipulative and based on inaccurate information.
The statement stressed that Azerbaijan respects its sovereignty and judicial system and does not accept interference by external bodies in its internal affairs.
