President Aliyev offers help to de-escalate Russia-Turkey tension
President Ilham Aliyev has said Azerbaijan is ready to help de-escalate tensions between Turkey and Russia over the downed jet.
Speaking to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu Friday in Baku, Aliyev said his country is concerned about the tension and regrets it.
"Azerbaijan has historically close ties with both Russia and Turkey,” Aliyev said in comments published by state news agency Azartac. "We are ready to make efforts to help de-escalate the tensions.”
Cavusoglu also met Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and other senior officials in Baku.
Azerbaijan sees Turkey as its closest political ally. President Aliyev has also developed close relations with the Russian government.
