The social media site will now organise tweets by relevance, instead of how old they are.

Jack Dorsey, the website’s new boss, is panicking after a slow growth rate of users.

Liina Potter, spokeswoman for Twitter, said in a statement: "Yes, this is an experiment.

"We're continuing to explore ways to surface the best content for people using Twitter.”

But users of the mammoth 320-million-strong social media platform have blasted the new "experiment”.

Using the site itself to criticise the decision made by senior management, Twitter profiles suggested they could quit the site.

One user called Owen Pike tweeted: "I use @Twitter to see what happens and when. Showing posts out of order is one of the things I hate the most about Facebook. Please don’t.”

Last month, Twitter replaced its option to "favourite” a tweet with ha new heart-shaped "like” button.

This brought the site closer to real Facebook, which also uses a "like” button.

In 2012, Facebook also changed its timeline to show posts, images and videos according to relevance rathe than chronology.
