Advocacy group established to help investigate journalist's death
An advocacy group has been established to help investigate the killing of journalist Rasim Aliyev.
The group, which brings together the country’s leading journalists, human rights defenders, lawyers and civil society activists, held its first meeting on Friday.
The meeting discussed the investigation initiated by the Prosecutor General’s Office into the beating death of the journalist.
It was said that no medics have been brought to account despite abundant evidence that the journalist passed away partly due to the fact that he wasn’t provided with proper medical service.
It was decided to start an independent investigation into the killing of the journalist.
Aliyev, 31, a reporter with ANN, was beaten up by a group of men in Baku in August and died later in hospital. His death prompted criticism by local and international media rights groups.
Police arrested several people, including Cavid Huseynov, a leading soccer player from Qabala FK, on suspicion of involvement in the murder.
Speaking in hospital hours before his death, the journalist said he was attacked by Huseynov's supporters after criticising him in a Facebook post.
