Stunned surgeons remove massive hairball from girl's stomach

The 11-year-old stunned surgeons after they pulled out the massive hairball.

She was taken to hospital after suffering from a severe stomach ache and loss of appetite.

Even a glass of water proved too much for the girl.

It wasn’t until she was taken to one of the hospitals in the city of Taraz, southern Kazakhstan, that the bizarre discovery was made.

Doctors found a huge ball of hair measuring 17cm across the stomach and around 35cm into he girl’s bowel.

Her parents said they had spotted their daughter chewing her long hair – but were unaware she was swallowing it.

The condition is often known as Rapunzel syndrome and ingested hair collects in the patient’s stomach and can cause severe problems.

Scientists, who called the hairball a "trichobezoar", said they were confident she could eat and drink again.

The girl is not the only one to have suffered the ill effects of Rapunzel Syndrome.

Earlier this year shocking footage was released of Kavita Kumari's plight after she had a 5ft long hairball removed from her stomach.

The 15-year-old would swallow hundreds of hairs a week – whether her own or her classmates.
