Apple patents 'superzoom' dual camera

Apple patents 'superzoom' dual camera
08.01.2016 22:00
The new iPhone 7 handset might not have one rear-facing camera, it could have two.

A new patent revealed that the Cupertino company has been working on a dual camera zoom lens that could make it into the upcoming model.

The two cameras will carry different optical packages with distinctive focal length, which allows the user to zoom in while taking videos and pictures without sacrificing the image’s quality.

The application goes into full detail on how the dual-camera technology can be designed with an optical zoom in the application.

One is used to take the photo and the second will take another in the same area.

By adding two separate cameras, which will form one less that uses a standard section and telephoto, gives Apple users the ability to choose a focal length at any time for any picture.

The patent also includes another nifty trick for those who enjoy shooting videos.

This new system will allow users to take a photo while recording a video and again, they won’t have to sacrifice the resolution.

Both rear facing cameras would harness maximum resolution, enabling users to capture high resolution photos as well as videos, according to the patent.

In addition the patent explains how iMovie can merge photos and videos into one single file.

A scenario is given about capturing a child blowing out birthday candles.

The second camera can be used as a telephoto camera module to zoom in on the child’s face the moment they blow out the candles.

The first camera can then capture a burst of high resolution still shots of their smiling face.

‘In some embodiments, first camera module is simultaneously capturing standard 1080p 30 frames per second video of the entire group of kids gathered and singing around the cake ,’ as written in the patent.

‘As the two camera modules are synchronized in time, the still images can easily be automatically inserted at the right time in a final video stream.’

Apple also discusses editing capabilities that allow the camera take 1080p video, 4k video, slow-motion video and still images – all of which can be combined later, according to WCCF Tech.

These new tweaks will let users record video and zoom in simultaneously, and use slow-motion video at the same time as well.

If Apple does design the next family of iPhones with this technology, they will live up to the rumor that the iPhone 7 is supposed to me completely different from any other iPhone we’ve seen in the past.
