Why you must update your Windows PC right NOW

Microsoft has announced that, from today, it will no longer support older versions of its web browsing tool.

This could create a major issue for users who decide to stick with the ageing software.

With no more security updates or patches, Explorer fans could find themselves open to malicious attacks and security vulnerabilities.

A message posted on Microsoft's support page confirmed: "Beginning January 12, 2016, only the most current version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical supports and security updates.

"Internet Explorer 11 is the last version of Internet Explorer, and will continue to receive security updates, compatibility fixes, and technical support on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10."

Microsoft is keen for all its users to upgrade to its latest Edge browser, however, it seems many Windows fans aren't budging.

A new survey from Camwood, questioned more than 1,000 internet users on whether or not they intend to make the switch to IE 11.

Amazingly, over half (56%) of respondents use Internet Explorer as their primary browser, yet only 26% will have made the switch by the end of support deadline, with 74% having no plans to upgrade before today's deadline.

Commenting on the research, Adrian Foxall, CEO of Camwood, said, "It’s a concern to see how many internet users are still failing to take these update deadlines seriously.

"Given the number of hacking scandals and security breaches that were reported in 2015 we were hoping to see an increase in the vigilance of individuals online. Unfortunately, it appears that the majority of internet users still don’t recognise regular updates as a vital part of basic internet security.”
