Armenian armed forces have 20 times violated the ceasefire on the line of contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops over the past 24 hours, said Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry Aug. 9.

Armenian army was using large-caliber machine guns.

Armenian armed forces stationed on nameless heights of Armenia’s Ijevan district and in the Dovekh village of the Noyemberyan district opened fire at Azerbaijani positions located in the Kemerli village and on nameless heights of the Gazakh district.

Azerbaijani positions located on nameless heights of the Gadabay district underwent fire from the positions located on nameless heights of Armenia’s Krasnoselsk district.

Moreover, Azerbaijani positions also took fire from the positions located near the Ashagi Seyidahmadli village of the Fizuli district, Kuropatkino village of the Khojavand district and from nameless heights of the Fizuli district.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
