Shortage of females: U2’s Bono becomes ‘Woman of the Year’

Since there is surely a shortage of both women, and clickbait fodder, Bono has become the first man to be named "Woman of the Year.”

The U2 singer, who is biologically male and identifies as such, accepted Glamour Magazine’s award at an all-star bash in Los Angeles, Sputnik reports.

"I know how ridiculous it is for me to be on this stage accepting this award,” he said in his speech. "But if I didn't know how ridiculous it was, I did have the blessed internet to remind me." As the name implies, this award is typically given to women who are making a difference in the world, and this year, they apparently had a shortage. Bono used his speech to urge president-elect Donald Trump to support women’s rights. "There is nowhere on Earth where women have the same opportunities as men,” Bono said, ironically including winning "Woman of the Year” awards.

"I say to the President-elect: look across to women, make equality a priority, it is the only way forward,” he said, while accepting the award meant for a female leader. "The train is leaving the station, be on it or be under it."

Bono was given the award for his launching of a movement called "Poverty is Sexist” which aims to spread awareness of AIDS epidemics among women in poverty-stricken African regions. Other award winners include International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde, fashion designer Miuccia Prada, pop star Gwen Stefani, Daesh kidnapping survivor Nadia Murad, Black Lives Matter activists Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garz, and Opal Tometi, model Ashley Graham, actress Zendaya and Olympic gymnast Simone Biles.
