Azerbaijani MP urges Iran to avoid overshadowing “friendly relations” with Baku

Azerbaijani MP urges Iran to avoid overshadowing “friendly relations” with Baku

"After gaining independence, Azerbaijan has established friendly and fraternal relations with all its neighbors, including Iran. However, Iran's position against Azerbaijan has not been unambiguous. This is especially true in its attitude towards the occupying Armenia. Thus, from the onset of Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijani territories, Iran forgot its "a Muslim is a brother of a Muslim" motto on its lips, did not express any attitude against the occupation, acted on double standards and expanded relations with the occupying state in all areas. Iran, as a Muslim state, considers itself part of the Islamic world, and even repeatedly calls itself the bulwark of Muslims, but the realities show the opposite," the chairman of the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation (ATUC), MP Sattar Mehbaliyev, told Report.

He noted that there had been 67 mosques in the Azerbaijani territories Armenia kept under occupation for nearly 30 years. "It is obvious to what state Armenia has brought those mosques. Iran, as a Muslim state, has never objected it. It even went further and shared Armenia’s frauds, considering the Yukhari Govhar Agha mosque in Shusha as a pearl of Iranian-Persian culture, as presented by the occupiers, and helped to repair it. During the occupation, photos of mosques destroyed by Armenia were regularly circulated, openly showing that pigs were kept there in order to insult Muslims. This Islamic state, which calls itself the backbone of the Muslims, was silent on those insulting scenes. Of course, projects implemented by Iran in those territories during the occupation, various `aids’ to the separatists were known to everyone.”

Mehbaliyev noted that Iran saw how over 1 million Azerbaijanis were expelled from their homes, and how they lived as IDPs for about 30 years and faced hardships.

"During the 44-day war of the Azerbaijani Army, Iran made only a belated statement. It was made at a time when our army had already liberated a large chunk of area, was continuing to advance rapidly, and it was obvious that all it was irresistible. Even after Azerbaijan liberated its territories from occupation, Iran continued to support separatism materially and morally.

"Using Armenian license plates, they delivered weapons, ammunition, food, fuel to the remnants of the destroyed separatists in the territory under the temporary control of the Russian peacekeepers and promoted separatism. Of course, Azerbaijan has taken decisive steps to prevent this. Our police and border guards have already set up checkpoints on the Goris-Kafan road to prevent such actions of Iran.

"Today, Iranian officials are unjustifiably accusing Azerbaijan with baseless statements, are making various threats, and are conducting military exercises near our borders. What is the need for this on the border with Azerbaijan!? This behavior of Iran is really regrettable and disappointing. Iran must thoroughly study the processes taking place in the region, thoroughly analyze and change its stance on Azerbaijan, and refrain from such actions that overshadow the historically-friendly relations between the two brotherly peoples.

"It is worth remembering that when the United States took a tough stance against Iran and tried to take advantage of Azerbaijan's opportunities in this matter, President Ilham Aliyev openly stated that a third state would not be allowed to act against Iran in one way or another from Azerbaijan," he concluded.
