Masked prison rioters 'set hostages on fire and throw them from roof of jail'

Masked prison rioters have reportedly set seven hostages on fire and thrown them from the roof of their jail.

The inmates, who have been rioting since Monday, are also reported to have dangled another man from a piece of wood.Prisoners at the jail in Guarapuava southern Brazil, took 12 officers and 160 other cons hostage yesterday morning, according to the authorities.Two prison guards and five prisoners were set on fire and thrown from the roof, Sky News reports.All are alive and being treated in hospital.The inmates were rebelling against sleeping conditions and the quality of food in their quarters.They also had demanded access to mobile phones.The Special Operations Battalion of the Military Police, along with a Special Operations Unit sent from the state capital Curitiba, entered into negotiations with the inmates later in the afternoon.Five inmates were transferred to hospital with one being treated for a serious head injury.The past year has been marked by similar rebellions in the state of Parana, with five others taking place during the last month.A rebellion in the Cascavel prison in August lasted 45 hours and left five people dead, resulting in 800 inmates being transferred to other prisons.Ten inmates had been transferred to the Guarapuava prison where Monday's incident took place, and where a previous rebellion had occurred on September 7, with 14 officers having been taken hostage.A representative of the local Military Police reported, however, that the rebellions in the separate prisons were isolated cases.(mirror.co.uk)Bakudaily.Az
