Hungary is working on major energy initiatives that involve importing electricity from Azerbaijan through Georgia and Romania, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said at a joint briefing with his Georgian counterpart Irakli Garibashvili in Budapest, reported from Georgian media.

Viktor Orban said that his country is very dependent on the import of natural gas: "The price of this natural fuel has increased sharply due to the sanctions imposed against Russia in the background of the events in Ukraine. In order to get out of the energy crisis, Hungary is preparing new initiatives in this direction. We want to have new large power lines and buy electricity from Azerbaijan through Georgia and Romania. Thanks to this initiative, we will save a significant amount of natural gas that we currently use to generate electricity."

According to him, Hungary will reduce the import of natural gas if electricity is imported: "I am very glad that the Prime Minister is committed to this initiative and that this issue is of fundamental importance for Hungary. We want to eliminate the energy problem and the crisis caused by high prices. Much can be done to acquire energy resources outside the EU."

Orban stressed that this initiative is crucial for Hungary against the background of importing large amounts of energy resources from distant countries.

The Prime Ministers of Georgia and Hungary signed a declaration on strategic partnership.
