Switzerland agrees to open NATO office in Geneva

Switzerland agrees to open NATO office in Geneva
04.04.2024 16:30
The Swiss Federal Council (Government) has agreed to the opening of a NATO office in Geneva, which will deal with relations with international organizations, spokesperson for the Swiss Foreign Ministry, Pierre-Alain Eltschinger, told TASS.

"Switzerland received a formal request from NATO at the end of 2023 to open a liaison office,” he noted. "The Federal Council has given approval in principle for the opening of such an office, and the Foreign Ministry is responsible for developing the next steps in cooperation with NATO.” "Information about the opening date will be communicated additionally,” he said.

In Bern, they proceed from the fact that "such an office is not a bilateral office of the North Atlantic Alliance with Switzerland, but is a NATO liaison office with international and non-governmental organizations based in Geneva.” "The Alliance already has two such liaison offices in New York and Vienna,” recalled the representative of the Foreign Ministry. "They contribute to the development of the Alliance’s relations with local international organizations and monitor events at the multilateral level.” The Geneva office "will follow the same multilateral logic.” In turn, "Switzerland will continue to communicate with NATO through its representative in Brussels.”
