Iran signals readiness to halt uranium enrichment

Iran signals readiness to halt uranium enrichment
20.11.2024 13:34
Tehran has expressed its readiness to halt further accumulation of uranium enriched to 60%, provided the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) refrains from adopting a Western-backed anti-Iran resolution this week, reported from Reuters.

According to the information from the IAEA, Iran has already taken preparatory steps to cease enrichment activities. Since August, Iran's stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% UF6 (uranium hexafluoride) has increased from 164.7 kg to 182.3 kg. The IAEA defines 42 kg of 60% enriched uranium as "theoretically sufficient to create a nuclear bomb with further enrichment."

Tehran has also agreed to consider allowing four additional IAEA inspectors into the country.

This comes on the heels of a statement by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who warned that the country would take appropriate measures in response to the adoption of any resolution by the IAEA Board of Governors that Tehran deems hostile.
