US won’t send troops to Gaza or bankroll its rebuilding — White House

US won’t send troops to Gaza or bankroll its rebuilding — White House

US President Donald Trump’s administration has already started discussing with its Middle East partners the idea of rebuilding Gaza, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, reported from TASS.

"That's again, why the American people elected him [Trump] because he has a different perspective to the foreign policy challenges that have been plaguing our world for many, many years. And so this is a great idea, and our partners in the region have begun to discuss it with this administration. We have the king of Bahrain coming to the White House next week, and the president has spoken to many of our partners and allies in the Middle East about this opportunity in Gaza," she said in an interview with Fox News.

The US does not plan to send troops to Gaza or finance its rebuilding, Leavitt added.

"The president has made it clear that he will not be sending boots on the ground Gaza. He is not committed to that. He also has made it clear that American taxpayers will not be funding this effort. The president is trying to strike a deal to ensure that Gaza can actually be a habitable place for human beings who want to live in peace with real economic development," she said.

On February 4, Trump said at a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following their talks at the White House, that the US was considering long-term ownership of the Gaza Strip in order to develop it for the sake of peace in the Middle East. He also proposed relocating Palestinians from the enclave to other countries in the region, which he said could pay for it. Trump indicated that the US is ready to send its troops to Gaza if necessary. The US president reiterated this vision for Gaza’s future on February 6.

Arab countries, Iran and some Western nations have opposed Trump's proposals. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow took note of the US president's idea, but also acknowledged that Egypt and Jordan have refused to cooperate with the plan.
