TAP AG to install electric compressors to cut emissions – managing director

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) consortium plans to install electric compressors at existing and future compressor stations to reduce its carbon footprint, TAP AG Managing Director Luca Schieppati said on Thursday.
Speaking at ministerial meetings in Baku under the Southern Gas Corridor and Green Energy Advisory Councils, Schieppati said the initiative is part of TAP’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Management Plan, which includes short-term emissions reduction targets through 2025.
“We are considering electric compressors as part of our strategy to lower emissions, especially in the context of potential system expansion,” he said.
Schieppati added that TAP is ready to play a long-term role in Europe’s energy transition and energy security, contributing to EU decarbonization goals by increasing pipeline capacity.
TAP, the final segment of the Southern Gas Corridor transporting Azerbaijani gas to Europe, began commercial operations on November 15, 2020. The 878-km pipeline crosses Greece, Albania, the Adriatic Sea, and Italy.
Azerbaijan started supplying gas to Europe via TAP on December 31, 2020. Under an agreement with the EU, annual exports are expected to reach at least 20 billion cubic meters (bcm) by 2027. As part of the first phase of TAP’s expansion, Italy will receive 1 bcm and Albania 200 million cubic meters.
